Ngurah Rai airport sits about 10km from Seminyak, 20km from Canggu and 37km from Ubud. The fares do not scale with that distance, and the mode most arrivals default to, the fixed-price taxi counter, is the only one whose price you cannot check before you land. Nobody publishes that tariff online. Everything else can be priced to the rupiah before you leave home.

The short answer

Book a private car before you fly. On published fares read on 26 October 2026, a pre-booked four-seat car costs US$6 to Seminyak, US$12 to Canggu and US$14 to Ubud. That sits below the range guides report for the airport counter, the price is fixed in writing, and the driver tracks your flight. If you have landed with nothing booked, order a Grab or Gojek from the GrabCar lounge rather than walking to the counter.

What does each option actually cost?

The counter spread is more than threefold on the same journey. One guide puts Seminyak at Rp250,000 to Rp350,000, another at Rp150,000 to Rp200,000, a third at about Rp110,000. None cites a tariff document. Do not build a budget on a number nobody will stand behind.

The toll is usually not your cost at all. The Bali Mandara road runs Nusa Dua to Ngurah Rai to Benoa, the wrong direction for Seminyak, for Canggu and for most routes to Ubud. Guides listing a toll surcharge as a standard hidden fee on these runs are describing a road your driver has no reason to use. If a counter driver adds it to a Seminyak fare, ask which gate you went through. Those same guides also quote the old Rp13,000 car rate, wrong since April 2024.

Is there a train from the airport?

No, and do not plan around one arriving soon. The Bali Urban Subway broke ground in September 2024 and stalled. According to the International Railway Journal in August 2026, the governor has abandoned the metro for lack of private investment, replacing it with light rail whose first phase would run from the airport to Canggu. That report says no feasibility study has been conducted yet, and that Rp980bn is allocated for land acquisition across 2027 and 2028. Bali’s transport department signed a railway development agreement on 1 September 2026, a planning step and not a service. Road transport is the only option for any trip you are booking now.

Can you do it on the public bus?

Only with a change, and only to Ubud. Trans Metro Dewata charges Rp4,400 a boarding, about 24 US cents, with a Rp2,000 concession for students, older passengers and disabled passengers. Corridor 2 links Terminal Ubung to the airport. Corridor 4 links GOR Ngurah Rai, which is in Denpasar and not at the airport, to the Monkey Forest car park in Ubud. No corridor serves Seminyak, Canggu or Kerobokan.

An airport to Ubud bus trip therefore means Corridor 2, a change, then Corridor 4, for Rp8,800 and roughly two hours if the connection behaves. For Seminyak or Canggu the bus reaches nothing useful and you finish in a car anyway.

Fares are cashless, so you need an Indonesian e-money card or a QRIS-capable payment app; tapping a foreign card at the door will not work. Airport departures finish around 19:50 on published timetables, so a late flight rules the bus out. The network has also been suspended and restarted before, most recently resuming in April 2025, so confirm it is running before you rely on it.

How long does each run take?

Seminyak is 20 to 40 minutes. Canggu is 45 to 75 minutes, because the last few kilometres run on lanes that do not widen for traffic. Ubud is 90 minutes to two hours. Those are door-to-door car times in normal conditions. The afternoon peak, roughly 16:00 to 19:00, pushes all three toward the top of their range.

The planning consequence matters more than the numbers. A 15:30 landing and a Ubud villa means arriving after dark, having spent the first two hours of the holiday in a car. If you land in the afternoon, a first night in Seminyak or Canggu and a move inland next morning costs one extra transfer and buys back an evening.

The Rp150,000 you owe before you arrive

Every foreign tourist pays Rp150,000 per person, about US$8.28, under Bali’s foreign tourist levy rules. It is charged once per trip rather than per entry, and is payable before you leave Indonesia. Payment is cashless only: credit card, bank transfer, virtual account, UnionPay or QRIS, through the official Love Bali portal or at an airport counter on arrival. Proof is a QR-code voucher emailed to the address you registered.

It applies regardless of age, so a family of four owes Rp600,000. Exemptions cover holders of diplomatic and official visas, transport crew, KITAS and KITAP permit holders, family unification visa holders, student visa holders and golden visa holders. Most of those are handled by showing the card to an officer. Golden visa holders and some other categories have to apply through the Love Bali system first.

Pay it online before you fly. The arrivals counter adds a queue for no saving.

What goes wrong in the arrivals hall

  • Accepting an approach before you reach the rank. Anyone offering you a car between the baggage hall and the official counter is not the official counter. Walk past, then decide.
  • Expecting a Grab driver at the kerb. Ride-hailing cars collect from the GrabCar lounge in the arrival terminal pick-up zone, not from the terminal door. Find the lounge first, then order, or the driver will cancel.
  • Agreeing a price in dollars. Fares are set in rupiah, and a dollar quote at the kerb is a conversion in the driver’s favour.
  • Changing all your money at the airport. Change a small amount for immediate costs and use an authorised exchange in town for the rest.
  • Assuming the meter is the cheap fallback. At the airport the fixed counter price applies, so the meter is not the escape hatch it is elsewhere on the island.
  • Paying a toll you did not use. Ask which gate.

Night arrivals, children and surfboards

Late landings are the strongest case for pre-booking. The bus has stopped, counter staffing thins, and a negotiation at 01:00 with tired children goes badly. A booked car costs the same at 01:00 as at 13:00, and the driver holds your flight number.

Child seats are an add-on selected at booking, not something a counter car produces on request. Add them when you book or accept travelling without one.

Surfboards are the trap specific to Bali. Published transfer terms state that special items such as surfboards are not allowed in four, five and seven-seat cars, and that a larger vehicle must be booked. A board bag arriving at a four-seat car is a refused transfer, not a tight squeeze. Book the twelve-seat vehicle and treat the difference as the cost of the board.

Frequently asked questions

Is Grab cheaper than the airport taxi counter? Usually, though not reliably at peak hours, and nobody can prove it either way while the counter tariff goes unpublished. Grab’s advantage is quoting before you accept.

Can I pay a driver by card? Assume not. Carry rupiah for a counter car. Grab and Gojek take card inside the app, which is the cleaner route if you have not changed money. Our note on card versus cash abroad covers which to reach for.

Does the domestic terminal work differently? The ride-hailing lounge and taxi rank serve both terminals, but they are separate buildings. Check which your flight uses before telling a driver where to find you.

Is the tourist levy the same as the visa fee? No. The Rp150,000 levy is a Bali provincial charge and sits on top of whatever your visa or visa on arrival costs. Paying one does not cover the other.

Should I book through my hotel? Compare it against a published fixed fare first. Hotel cars often cost more than double the figures above, particularly on the Ubud run. Our guide to where to stay in Bali sets out which areas keep the transfer short.

How does Bali compare with other Asian hubs? Badly, on transit. Kuala Lumpur runs a dedicated airport rail link. Bali runs a bus that reaches none of its three biggest tourist areas.
