The short answer
Buy the unreserved ticket. On the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen the unreserved limited express charge is identical on every train, so unreserved on a Nozomi costs exactly what unreserved on a stopping Kodama costs. Tokyo to Shin-Osaka is 13,870 yen unreserved against 14,720 yen for a reserved Nozomi seat. You are paying 850 yen for a guaranteed seat, not for speed. The speed is free.
Reserve in four cases, none of them marginal. Your largest bag’s three dimensions total more than 160cm, which shuts the unreserved cars to you. Your date is one of the 53 days this JR fiscal year when the Nozomi runs with no unreserved car. You are buying on or after 1 July 2027, when the reserved charge rises and the unreserved charge does not. Or you hold a Japan Rail Pass, whose reservations are free, so price stops mattering.
| Tokyo to Shin-Osaka, one way, adult, regular season | Buying now | From 1 July 2027 | Premium over unreserved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unreserved, any train | 13,870 yen | 13,870 yen | Baseline |
| Reserved, Hikari or Kodama | 14,400 yen | 14,400 yen | 530 yen |
| Reserved, Nozomi | 14,720 yen | 15,420 yen | 850 yen now, 1,550 yen later |
What are you actually paying for?
A Shinkansen ticket is two charges stacked. The basic fare covers the distance and never changes with your seat. The limited express charge covers the train, and that is what the seat question touches. Tokyo to Shin-Osaka the basic fare is 8,910 yen and the limited express charge is 4,960 yen unreserved or 5,810 yen for a reserved Nozomi seat.
JR Central sets the unreserved charge at the regular-season reserved charge minus 530 yen. The Nozomi is the exception that matters: its reserved charge carries a premium over the Hikari and Kodama, but its unreserved charge does not, because between Tokyo and Hakata an all-Nozomi unreserved journey is charged at the Hikari rate. That is why the gap is 850 yen on the Nozomi and 530 yen on the Hikari over the same track.
One trap sits inside the rule. Use a reserved seat on any part of the journey and the whole journey is charged at the reserved rate. Tokyo to Nagoya reserved, then unreserved to Shin-Osaka, costs the full reserved price, not a blended one.
Does the date change the gap?
Yes, on one side of it only. The reserved charge moves by season: 200 yen below the regular rate off-peak, 200 yen above in peak season, 400 yen above in high-peak. The unreserved charge is flat all year, so certainty is cheapest when seats are easiest to get and dearest when you most want one.
| Season | Reserved premium, Hikari or Kodama | Reserved premium, Nozomi Tokyo to Shin-Osaka |
|---|---|---|
| Off-peak | 330 yen | 650 yen |
| Regular | 530 yen | 850 yen |
| Peak | 730 yen | 1,050 yen |
| High-peak | 930 yen | 1,250 yen |
Shifting a departure one day out of a high-peak block cuts 400 yen off a reserved seat and nothing off an unreserved one. Price the day either side before you fix the date.
What changes on 1 July 2027?
On 16 October 2026 JR Central, JR West and JR Kyushu announced a revision to the Nozomi and Mizuho reserved-seat limited express charge, for tickets bought on or after 1 July 2027. The release states plainly that the unreserved ordinary-seat charge is not revised. The whole increase lands on the reserved side.
| Nozomi reserved, regular season, one way | Now | From 1 July 2027 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo to Nagoya | 11,300 yen | 11,880 yen | plus 580 yen |
| Tokyo to Shin-Osaka | 14,720 yen | 15,420 yen | plus 700 yen |
| Tokyo to Hiroshima | 19,760 yen | 20,620 yen | plus 860 yen |
Set that against the unchanged unreserved fare and the Nozomi reserved premium goes from 850 yen to 1,550 yen on Tokyo to Shin-Osaka, an 82 per cent rise. Tokyo to Nagoya it goes from 740 yen to 1,320 yen.
The Green car is a separate, larger revision, rising for travel from 15 December 2027 by 800 yen on the shortest distance band and 4,510 yen on the longest. Tokyo to Shin-Osaka in a Nozomi Green car goes from 19,590 yen to 23,290 yen once both apply.
Which days have no unreserved seat at all?
During designated peak periods every Nozomi between Tokyo and Hakata runs fully reserved. JR Central switches unreserved cars 1 and 2, which hold 165 seats, to reserved. An unreserved ticket still lets you board, but only to stand on an ordinary-car deck, never in Green cars 8 to 10, and staff may turn you away from a full train.
| Fully reserved Nozomi period | Dates | Days |
|---|---|---|
| Golden Week | 24 April to 6 May 2026 | 13 |
| Obon | 7 to 16 August 2026 | 10 |
| Silver Week | 18 to 23 September 2026 | 6 |
| Sports Day | 10 to 12 October 2026 | 3 |
| Labour Thanksgiving Day | 21 to 23 November 2026 | 3 |
| New Year | 25 December 2026 to 5 January 2027 | 12 |
| Coming of Age Day | 9 to 11 January 2027 | 3 |
| Vernal Equinox | 20 to 22 March 2027 | 3 |
That is 53 days out of 365, close to one day in seven, and the list now reaches past the three big holidays into ordinary three-day weekends. If your date sits inside a block and you still want the unreserved price, take a Hikari: it keeps its unreserved cars and costs about 25 extra minutes to Shin-Osaka.
Does your luggage decide for you?
Often, and this is the dimension most comparisons leave out. On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, a bag whose length plus width plus height tops 160cm counts as oversized and must go in a baggage area behind the last row of certain reserved cars. JR Central is explicit that unreserved cars have no such seats and that oversized baggage may not go to an unreserved seat. For such a bag the comparison collapses: the reservation costs nothing extra, and boarding without one means a 1,000 yen baggage fee including tax plus the conductor moving your bag. Above 250cm it cannot board at all.
Supply is thinner than the rule suggests. A 16-car Nozomi carries 57 seats with a baggage area and 10 with a baggage compartment, out of 1,323 in the set, so book early. Two points cut the other way: a bag of 160cm or less needs no reservation and fits the overhead rack, about 42cm deep, and strollers, musical instruments and sports equipment are exempt from the rule entirely.
Who should pick unreserved anyway?
Anyone whose plans are not fixed. An unreserved ticket is valid on any train in the same direction on its date, and cars 1 and 2 sit at the platform end where queues are shortest. It also suits light packers on an off-peak weekday, anyone boarding at Tokyo or Shin-Osaka where trains start empty, and short hops like Tokyo to Shin-Yokohama, where a seat for 18 minutes is not worth 850 yen. Rail Pass holders are the case in reverse: reservations are free, so there is no reason to sit unreserved, and a Nozomi needs a separate supplement, which we cost in our Japan Rail Pass break-even piece. The same seat logic applies to the Narita and Haneda runs into Tokyo.
Traps to avoid
- Assuming an unreserved ticket gets you a seat in a peak block. It gets you deck standing room, and not even that on a full train.
- Arriving with a 165cm suitcase and no baggage-area reservation. That is 1,000 yen, and your bag goes where the conductor says.
- Missing a reserved train and expecting to carry an oversized bag onto the next one. A later unreserved seat is fine, the bag is not. That needs a fresh reserved baggage seat.
- Paying the Nozomi reserved premium when a Hikari leaves at a similar time. On Tokyo to Shin-Osaka that is 320 yen over the Hikari reserved charge.
Questions people actually ask
Can I change an unreserved ticket to a reserved one?
Yes, once, with no change fee, paying only the difference. Do it at a ticket office or a reserved-seat machine before you pass through the gate on your travel date.
How far ahead can I reserve?
Ticket offices and machines sell reserved seats from 10:00 one month before departure. smartEX and Express Reservation release some seats at 05:30 one year ahead, with the train and seat number confirmed after 08:00 one month out.
What if I miss my reserved train?
Your reserved ticket lets you stand on the deck of a Nozomi ordinary car, or take an unreserved seat on a later Hikari or Kodama, on the same day only. Sitting in a reserved seat again costs a new limited express ticket.
Which cars are unreserved?
On the Nozomi, cars 1 and 2. On the Hikari and Kodama there are more and they vary by service, so read the platform display rather than trusting a car number you read once. Car 7 on 16-car sets is the S Work car, sold as reserved and meant for quiet laptop use.
