What this site is
Rooms & Rides is a travel research site. Not a travel agency, not a booking service, and not somebody’s travel diary.
We don’t sell trips, hold your money, or take your booking. What we do is the homework: read the terms and conditions, compare what the booking sites actually charge, work out what a trip really costs, and write down the answer.
Then you go and book wherever you like.
Why bother
Travel is one of the few things people spend thousands on while working from almost no reliable information. The comparison sites optimise for their own margin. The airlines bury the rules in a PDF. The blogs mostly copy each other.
Meanwhile the questions that decide whether a trip is good or expensive are all answerable, if someone sits down and does the work:
- Which booking site is actually cheaper for the same room, once fees land?
- What is the car hire company allowed to charge you at the desk, and what can you refuse?
- Your flight was four hours late, do you get money, and how much?
- Is the all-inclusive genuinely cheaper than booking the parts?
- What does a week in this place cost, honestly, with real numbers?
Nobody needs to fly anywhere to answer those. They need to read carefully, check prices properly, and be willing to say “this one, because…”.
How it works, honestly
This is a small operation. Right now that means one person doing the research and the writing, not a newsroom. There is no point pretending otherwise. You would work it out, and it would undermine everything else on the site.
What that means in practice:
- We don’t claim to have been everywhere. When a page is built from research rather than from standing in the place, it says so. There are no invented hotel stays and no stock photos passed off as ours.
- We work from primary sources. Airline conditions of carriage, EU regulations, rental company terms, official transport operators, published deck plans and tariffs. We link to them so you can check.
- We show the arithmetic. If we say a package saves you €180, the breakdown is on the page.
- Prices carry a date. Every figure says which month it was checked, and that date only changes when it has actually been re-checked.
That’s a narrower promise than “we travelled there and here’s our verdict”. It’s also one we can keep on every single page, which matters more.
What we cover
Two halves of every trip, which is where the name comes from:
Rooms means hotels, apartments and resorts: how the booking sites really differ, what the fees are, and which areas of a city suit which traveller.
Rides means flights, cruises, car hire, transfers, rail and ferries: fares, baggage rules, insurance traps, passenger rights, and what “included” leaves out.
Then the practical layer that ruins trips when you get it wrong: travel insurance, eSIMs, money and visas, plus free tools for the calculations worth doing before you book.
What we won’t do
No fake urgency, no invented countdowns, no “3 people are viewing this”. No paid placements dressed up as rankings. No prices without a date. No pretending desk research is first-hand experience.
How this is paid for
Right now, it isn’t. The site carries no advertising and no affiliate links.
That will change. Eventually some links here will earn a commission when you book through them, at no extra cost to you. When it does, it will be disclosed on every page that carries them, and the full explanation is already written up at How we make money.
The order matters, and it’s deliberate: useful content first, monetisation after. A site that starts by working out where the money is tends to end up writing for the money rather than for the reader.
