Singapore is about 50km across and the adult train fare caps at S$2.57 however far you go, so the area you sleep in cannot cost you much time. It can cost you a lot of money. Priced for the same Wednesday night in November, the median Marina Bay hotel came out at S$633 and the median Little India hotel at S$95.
The short answer
Stay in Bugis, Chinatown or along the river. Each sits on two MRT lines, each priced between S$146 and S$183 in our November sample, and each puts a hawker centre inside a ten minute walk. Bugis is the first-trip default, Chinatown the transport pick, the river the choice if your evenings are the point.
Orchard at S$238 buys shopping and the deepest hotel supply in the city, not better transport. Marina Bay buys the view and charges about four times the river rate for it. Sentosa is a decision about your children rather than about Singapore, and its cheapest hotel in our sample was S$443.
Little India and Jalan Besar were the cheapest central beds we found, by a wide margin. The compromise is not the commute, which is one or two stops. It is that the district is residential and shuts by mid evening.
| Area | Lines at the door | Priced | Cheapest | Median | Dearest |

| Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar | EW, NE and TE at Outram Park | 11 | S$109 | S$146 | S$200 |
| Bugis and Kampong Glam | EW and DT at Bugis | 10 | S$106 | S$159 | S$427 |

What does a night actually cost, and how do we know?
No public survey breaks Singapore hotel rates down by district, so we priced them. On 5 October 2026 we ran the same Booking.com search against each district: two adults, one room, hotels only, staying Wednesday 11 November to Thursday 12 November 2026. The figures are the totals shown as including taxes and fees. We discarded listings sold as blocks of five or eleven hours rather than as a night.
Sample sizes differ because the districts do. Marina Bay has twelve hotels and we priced all twelve. Orchard has 36 and we priced eighteen. Read this as a comparison between areas on one night, not a forecast of your night.
Marina Bay’s median was 6.7 times Little India’s, same night, same city, and no journey time offsets that. For a citywide anchor, the Singapore Tourism Board put the average room rate across all gazetted hotels at S$273.56 for January to September 2025, at 81.9 percent occupancy. The luxury towers pull that average up, which is why six of our eight areas sit below it.
Why does your area matter less here than in almost any other city?
Because the island is small and the fare table flattens. The Public Transport Council sets adult card fares from S$1.28 for journeys up to 3.2km to S$2.57 for anything over 40.2km. Every address in the table above is within roughly 6km of every other one, so almost all your trips fall in the S$1.28 to S$1.60 band. Cash costs S$2.10 to S$3.20 for the same rides, so tap a card.
Treat the area as a price and noise decision, then, not a logistics one. The exception is the airport, because Changi sits on a branch line and you change at Tanah Merah for the city. Our Singapore attractions costing covers which sights justify the fare.
Do not buy the Singapore Tourist Pass by reflex. It is S$17 for one day, S$24 for two, S$29 for three, S$37 for four and S$45 for five. At a typical central fare of S$1.49 the one day pass needs eleven rides to break even, and even at the S$2.57 maximum it needs seven. A sightseeing day is four or five. Load a stored value card.
Which area suits which trip?
Bugis and Kampong Glam
The best default for a first trip. Bugis carries the East West and Downtown lines, with Rochor and Bencoolen a few streets away. The S$159 median covered Hotel 81 Bugis at S$106 and Park View at S$129, then jumped to Naumi at S$298 and Andaz at S$427. Avoid it if you want quiet, because Haji Lane and its bars run late and street noise reaches low floors.
Chinatown, Tanjong Pagar and Outram
Outram Park is a triple interchange on the East West, North East and Thomson East Coast lines, which is as good as Singapore gets, and Chinatown station adds the Downtown line. At a S$146 median this was the cheapest area with that reach: Hotel Mono S$137, The Southbridge Hotel S$148, Heritage Collection on Pagoda S$200. Avoid it if you need a large room, because the stock is converted shophouses.
Clarke Quay, Boat Quay and Robertson Quay
Worth the S$183 median only if the evenings are the point. This is the licensed nightlife strip, so the trade is explicit: a short walk home, paid for in noise until the small hours. Hmlet Essentials was S$119, M Social and Studio M both S$168, Novotel Robertson Quay S$282. Robertson Quay is the quiet end and furthest from a station. Avoid the strip with young children.
Orchard
Two lines at Orchard, a third interchange at Dhoby Ghaut, and a S$238 median that buys less than it looks because you pay a shopping premium. The value inside it is real: Hotel Supreme at S$115 and RELC International at S$160 undercut most of Bugis. Avoid Orchard if you are not shopping, because the walk from most hotels is to a mall rather than to food.
Little India and Jalan Besar
The cheapest central beds in the city, in a tight band: nine hotels between S$85 and S$107, with Haising at S$85 and Nest Hotel at S$95. Little India station is a North East and Downtown interchange, one stop from Dhoby Ghaut and three from Chinatown. Avoid it if you want evening life at the door, and expect Sundays around Serangoon Road to be the busiest day by far.
Katong and Joo Chiat
The value pick for a second visit. The Thomson East Coast line now calls at Tanjong Katong and Marine Parade, which removed the one real objection to staying out here. A S$110 median bought Venue Hotel at S$98, with Holiday Inn Express Katong at S$215 and Hotel Indigo Katong at S$333 above it. Avoid it on a short first trip, because Marina Bay is 20 to 25 minutes away rather than five.
Marina Bay and Raffles Place
Twelve hotels, all priced. Dao by Dorsett at S$347 was the only one under S$450. Conrad was S$477, The Fullerton S$627, the Ritz-Carlton Millenia S$707, Marina Bay Sands S$1,019. The connections are good rather than special, and Raffles Place empties after office hours. Take it for two nights if the skyline is why you came, not for a week.
Sentosa
A resort island, priced like one, from ONE15 Marina at S$443 and Hotel Ora at S$489 up to Capella at S$1,978. The Sentosa Express from VivoCity costs S$4 one way, is free once you are on the island, and the boardwalk costs nothing. Avoid it if you want to see the city, because every trip into town starts with a monorail and a change at HarbourFront.
Where should you not stay?
Anything that is not in Singapore. A Booking.com search for Singapore on 5 October 2026 returned filters for Johor Bahru City Square and for malls in Batam, both across an international border. The saving does not survive two immigration queues a day.
Geylang, where the cheapest rooms in our whole dataset sat at S$70 to S$86. It is Singapore’s established red-light district, documented as such by the National Library Board, and it is on one line only.
Any listing priced for a block of hours. Our searches returned rooms sold as five hours from 10am to 3pm and as eleven hours from 8pm to 7am, at prices that read as a bargain next to a night. Read the room name before the price.
A private flat or condo taken for under three months. The Urban Redevelopment Authority is explicit that short-term accommodation in private residential property is illegal in Singapore, and that any stay under three consecutive months is covered. Serviced apartments carry a seven day minimum. Hotels carry none.
The traps that cost money
The quoted rate is legally allowed to exclude tax. IRAS exempts hotels that impose a service charge from the rule that prices be displayed inclusive of GST, provided they state that prices are subject to GST and service charge. GST is then charged on the room rate plus the service charge. So S$100 becomes S$110 with service and S$119.90 with 9 percent GST on top, an uplift of 19.9 percent rather than 19. Our table is inclusive, so compare it against a hotel’s inclusive total. Mandatory extras work the same way, and our guide to resort fees and when you can refuse them takes those apart.
Grand Prix week carries a cess on every hotel in the country. For the 2026 race the Singapore Tourism (Cess Collection) Order sets the taxable period as 8 to 11 October 2026 and fixes the cess at 30 percent of gross receipts for the nineteen hotels in Part 1 of its Schedule, 20 percent for the 230 entries in Part 2 and 15 percent for the 226 in Part 3. Those lists cover effectively every licensed hotel in Singapore, so no address escapes it. Part 1 is the trackside set, including Marina Bay Sands, Raffles, Fairmont, Swissotel The Stamford and both Fullerton hotels.
Cancelling inside that window is taxed too. The same Order treats a termination as a taxable transaction and counts cancellation charges and forfeited deposits as gross receipts, along with any early check-in or late check-out fee. A refundable rate is worth more than usual over a race weekend.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth paying more to be near Marina Bay?
Not on transport grounds. Marina Bay is three stops from Chinatown and four from Bugis, so you are buying the window view at about S$450 a night. Two nights there and five elsewhere beats seven nights there on most budgets.
Which area is best with young children?
Sentosa if Universal Studios is the plan and the budget tolerates a S$443 floor. Otherwise Katong, where the Thomson East Coast line runs direct into town, rooms are larger for the money and the evening noise is domestic rather than commercial.
How cheaply can you sleep centrally in Singapore?
About S$85 to S$110 a night for two people including tax, in Little India, Jalan Besar or Joo Chiat. Below that you are buying an hourly block or a Geylang address. Capsule hotels sit in the same band and trade space for location.
Can you book an Airbnb in Singapore?
Not legally for a holiday. The URA requires a minimum of three consecutive months in any private residential property and enforces it against owners and tenants. Entire homes still appear in Singapore search results, and booking one risks your accommodation being shut down mid trip.
Does Singapore charge a tourist tax on hotels?
No standing city or tourist tax. On top of the room you pay 9 percent GST and, at most hotels, a 10 percent service charge. The only extra levy is the Grand Prix cess. For the same exercise in a city with far deeper hotel supply, see our Tokyo base by train line pricing. For the same exercise three hours away at a third of the room price, see Where to Stay in Kuala Lumpur.
