Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur is the cheap big city in this part of Asia, and that is the main reason to put it on an itinerary. The average hotel room here ran RM334.9 in the first quarter of 2026. Singapore’s average room was S$278.90 in July 2026, about RM890 at the early October 2026 rate, so a Singapore bed costs roughly two and a half times as much. Occupancy in KL was 60.7 per cent over the same quarter, so you are not competing for inventory either.
Within Malaysia the picture flips. Only Penang averaged more per room than KL, and the national figure was RM231.9, so this is the expensive city in a cheap country. Budget from that, not from the country’s reputation.
It is a city of towers, malls and elevated railway with the food in the gaps between them. That food is the strongest argument for staying more than one night. The weakest argument is walking. Pavements stop without warning, crossings are long, and Malaysia’s annual temperature range is under two degrees, so there is no cooler month to wait for and a distance that looks short on a map is not.
KL will not suit you if you want a walkable historic core, because the old centre is small and the rest is spread out. It will not suit you if you expect Singapore’s transport integration either. Separate operators run the Rapid KL lines, the KTM Komuter trains and the airport express, some interchanges mean a walk outside, and the gaps get filled by Grab.
What it does suit: three or four days of eating, a stopover that earns an extra night, central rooms at a standard that costs double in Singapore, and day trips to Batu Caves, Putrajaya and Melaka.
